Lisa Helps

The Basics: Lisa Helps is the Mayor of Victoria. She was first elected as a city councillor in 2011 and was elected Mayor in 2014, receiving 39.6% of votes cast. She was re-elected for a second term in 2018 with 42.6% of the vote. She serves alongside eight councillors, who are elected at-large. 

Background: Before entering politics, Helps was executive director of a community micro-lending program and worked as a community organizer. She has a BA in history and women's studies, an MA in history and is working on a PhD in history.

Things You (Really) Should Know: Located on the South shore of Vancouver Island, Victoria is the capital city of British Columbia. It is one of the sunniest cities in the country, receiving an average of 2,183 hours of sunshine annually. The metropolitan region has a population of 367,770 (2016).

Fun Fact: Helps was elected by a margin of 89 votes in 2014. The fifth-place candidate in that election, who received 253 votes, was "Changes the Clown."
