The Basics: Marc Demers is the Mayor of the City of Laval. He was elected Mayor of Laval in 2013 and re-elected in 2017, receiving 46% of votes cast.

Background: Before entering politics, Demers served for 30 years as a police officer with the Laval Police, retiring in 2001. After retiring, he operated a private investigation company, called Demers Pro Services.

Things You (Really) Should Know: Laval is the third largest city in Québec with a population of 422,993 (2016). The previous two Mayors, Gilles Vaillancourt and Alexandre Duplessis both resigned and are featured in the book Mayors Gone Bad by Philip Slayton.

Fun Fact: "One of Demers's earliest cases, in the 1980s, was a fraud investigation of a city councillor called Gilles Vaillancourt." (Mayors Gone Bad, pages 109-110).
