Maurizio Bevilacqua

The Basics: Maurizio Bevilacqua is the Mayor of the City of Vaughan. He was first elected in October 2010, and was re-elected for a third term in 2018 with more than 70% of the vote. Before becoming Mayor, Bevilacqua served for 22 years as a Liberal Member of Parliament.

Background: Bevilacqua was born in Italy and moved to Canada at the age of 10. He studied at York University, and became involved in student politics. He worked for a brief time as a staff member for a Member of Parliament before running for politics himself.

Things You (Really) Should Know: Italians comprise more than 31% of Vaughan's population. Bevilacqua is Vaughan's second mayor of Italian descent.

Fun Fact: Bevilacqua holds the record for the most votes ever received by a candidate in a Canadian federal election.
