Maurizio Bevilacqua

The Basics: Maurizio Bevilacqua is the Mayor of the City of Vaughan. He was first elected in October 2010, and has served two terms. Before becoming Mayor, Bevilacqua served for 22 years as a Liberal Member of Parliament.

Background: Bevilacqua was born in Italy and moved to Canada at the age of 10. He studied at York University, and became involved in student politics. He worked for a brief time as a staff member for a Member of Parliament before running for politics himself.

Things You (Really) Should Know: Italians comprise more than 31% of Vaughan's population. Bevilacqua is Vaughan's second mayor of Italian descent.

Fun Fact: Bevilacqua holds the record for the most votes ever received by a candidate in a Canadian federal election.
