Regis Labeaume

The Basics: Régis Labeaume is the Mayor of Quebec City. He was first elected as Mayor in 2007, receiving 59% of votes cast. He was re-elected in 2009, 2013 and 2017. 

Background: Before entering politics, Labeaume was mining executive, serving as president of Société minière Mazarin. He was also president and general manager of Fondation de l'entrepreneurship, an entrepreneurship organization focused on the Quebec City region. He has a BA in sociology from Université Laval.

Things You (Really) Should Know: Municipal politics in Quebec City involves municipal political parties. As of the 2017 election, 17 of the 21 city councillors are members of Labeaume's party, known as Équipe Labeaume.

Fun Fact: Labeaume has championed bringing an NHL hockey team back to Quebec City. A new 18,000 seat arena, Videotron Centre, was built in 2015 at a cost of $370 million, paid for by municipal and provincial government. It is operated by Quebecor Media.
