Tara Veer

The Basics: Tara Veer is the Mayor of the City of Red Deer. She was first elected to Red Deer City Council in October 2004 as a Councillor. At the time, Veer was 26 years old. After serving as a Councillor for nine years, Veer ran for Mayor in the 2013 election. She won with 46% of the vote, defeating a fellow Councillor. She was re-elected for a second term as Mayor in the October 2017 municipal election, with more than 88% of the vote.

Background: Veer was born and raised in Red Deer. She studied sociology at Red Deer College, and completed an undergraduate degree in sociology at Queen's University.

Things You (Really) Should Know: Red Deer is the third largest city in Alberta, after Calgary and Edmonton. It is located at the midpoint between these larger cities.

Fun Fact: Veer was her high school valedictorian. She is also one of the few Canadian mayors with a name that rhymes with the name of her city.
